In the wake of the tragic hunting accident in Imperia, a direct and immediate poll was launched on the website indiscreto.info. Abolish hunting: Yes or No. Hunters and common sense win.
As of today—Friday, October 5, 2018—the poll shows an unequivocal result: 83% support those who do not intend to abolish hunting. This strong, and certainly uncontroversial, result must be analyzed, as must its dynamics, given that the departure was for hunters with severe handicaps.
The survey's launch favored the abolitionist tendencies of what is evidently a small segment of the Italian population. This may be because the survey was likely coordinated with one or more environmental and animal rights groups, or because the text on the website that featured the survey presented a portrayal of hunting that, even with a sober background, essentially depicted it as a cruel act.
The first few hours of the survey therefore favored the abolitionists. Then, a significant and progressive recovery occurred throughout Wednesday, which had already led to a 72% support for hunting by late evening. Today, two days later, the numbers have further consolidated, with 72% now at 83%.
An important victory, perhaps even exaggerated in numbers, but significant for a series of factors.
The first is the evidence that, aside from a small number of animal rights activists and environmentalists who would do without hunting and hunters, the majority of public opinion has no preconceptions against hunting, at least as long as hunters behave ethically and non-invasively, without overdoing it and becoming a nuisance to human activities. Therefore, a portion of the citizens who stumbled upon the survey effectively rejected the word " abolish ."
The second is participation. All the hunting websites and association press offices took action online and on Facebook to encourage hunters to vote in the survey, and the result was that the percentages literally reversed within hours. This had already happened a few years ago with a similar survey conducted by the website corriere.it.
Participation is fundamental, and to enable it, all of us hunting portal managers have the only way to immediately send newsletters to hunters' email addresses. This is a winning strategy, as it has been this time. And to do so, these email addresses must be provided to these portals.
Therefore, all hunters are encouraged to subscribe to the various portals' newsletters so they can act immediately when attacks like this one, which focus entirely on the speed of statistical data generation, arise.
