Hunting activity in Austria, all things considered, allows the country across the Alps to contain the costs of environmental protection.
There are only 118 Austrian hunters, and their management efforts are significant and ultimately result in savings in management costs estimated at up to one billion euros... Luckily, hunters exist.
The problems that the Austrian state would have to face are not insignificant in relation to the damage to forest biology and not simply caused by the species.
But wild boar and wolves are also very present, causing damage to the optimal growth of the forest and to crops and livestock farming.
There are those who claim, perhaps rightly so, that the expansion of the wolf follows that of the ungulates and that if Austria were uniformly populated by the canid, the number could amount to a maximum of 70 packs.
However, this number is insufficient to contain the large deer population; estimates state that wolves would be able to control only 8 percent of the summer deer population.
