While the usual suspects – environmental associations – are calling for anything to limit hunting, even to the point of abolishing it, the Minister of Agriculture has clear ideas about the emergency facing the wild boar species.
The wild boar crisis is an emergency, and Minister Centinaio is considering the actions his ministry can take to protect agricultural activities. Given the current situation regarding wild boar wildlife, Centinaio stated that a solution to the problem is just around the corner. It's necessary to extend the wild boar hunt by an additional month and increase the number of hunters and, consequently, the teams dedicated to this hunt; this could also be a way to bring in food service, given that many animals in Italy are exported abroad.
This is certainly not a statement that will be welcomed by environmentalists and animal rights activists, but it is the opinion of a Minister who is called upon to go beyond the ethical feelings of some, for the good of agriculture and the economy.
Minister Centinaio also addressed the wolf problem. The Ministry of Agriculture is awaiting a management plan currently being developed by the Ministry of the Environment, even though a European law and a national plan exist on the matter.
Centinaio also wanted to involve the Ministry of Health in the matter of slaughtering wild boars for catering, to ensure maximum support in verifying the health of the meat.
