Referring to recent statements made at a press conference by regional councilor Roberto Morroni, Federcaccia Umbra believes it is necessary to wait for concrete action before taking any official and definitive positions.
That said, however, Federcaccia hopes that the Regional Department of the Environment and Hunting's proposals will take into account the overall management of the agricultural, forestry, and pastoral areas designated for scheduled hunting, and, with them, all huntable species. In this regard, we reiterate the urgent need for a review of regional hunting regulations, starting with those pertaining to wild boar. We believe that the Regional Wild Boar Management Plan is the fundamental tool for revising the regional regulations governing this type of hunting, as well as the only viable path to properly planning the culling of this species. The "emergency response" solution, in fact, cannot represent a valid countermeasure to the problem of crop damage, lacking—among other things—any principle of selection. We recall that Federcaccia Umbra had already made its own expert available to the previous regional government for wild boar management: we obviously confirm our willingness to continue along this path, in everyone's interest.
We believe that, for the best management of all forms of hunting, it is appropriate to balance harvest periods that take into account all hunting specialties, with particular attention to the beginning and end of the season. Regarding wild boar, for example, a plausible proposal, already formulated by us, is to open the season on the second Sunday in October—when many crops are still in existence—and close in January, with the possibility of some scheduled operations to finalize and complete the culling, while still taking into account the logistical needs associated with winter restocking and capture activities for small sedentary game.
Returning to wild boar hunting, we recall that, every season, the work of wild boar teams is crucial to safeguarding agricultural production. This occurs year-round, not just during the short period—three months—during which, under national law 157/92, the hunting of wild boars is permitted. The hunting world therefore remains the natural ally of the agricultural sector and of the bodies responsible for compensating for any damage to crops.
