The key word is... urgently a wolf management plan. Veneto's Agriculture Councilor, Giuseppe Pan, has returned to focus his attention on the issue of the wolf.
According to the councilor, this animal killed 400 head of livestock and injured 50 last year, mostly sheep and goats; another 125 animals are still missing. These numbers create an alarming situation that must be addressed somehow. These predations amount to over €168 in compensation payments to farmers.
The summary document highlights that the most affected provinces are Vicenza and Verona, followed by Belluno and Treviso. The Councilor emphasized the compensation provided by the Region for every application received. Despite everything, it is recognized that these responses are not effective in definitively solving the problem and allowing wolves to coexist with livestock production.
The Veneto Region has sent the Ministry of the Environment and the Committee for Agricultural Policies of the Conference of the Regions a summary of confirmed predation in the region over the last two years, including the amount of damages.
Pan calls for a national discussion on the animal's management plan, especially in areas affected by grazing and livestock farming. Everything needs to be rethought and strategies revised, given the ever-increasing number of attacks.
