The Lega Umbra, through councilors Puletti and Mancini, is calling for the containment of the species, whose large presence is causing a biological imbalance in the lake's delicate ecosystem.
The Umbria Regional League is asking the Regional Council to authorize measures to contain the cormorant population, which it believes is over-populated in the basin. The request will be formalized in a question aimed at urging the regional government to initiate the necessary authorization process.
The concept expressed by the councilors is based on the excessive proliferation of cormorants, which is partly responsible for the loss of fish available to fishing companies and fishermen.
Another indication of the excessive presence is the large quantity of excrement, which, containing a parasite and depositing on the shallow lake bed, enters the life cycle of lake fish, altering their behavior and health.
It is believed that the number of cormorants has increased in recent years, due to their tendency to nest there, thus further exacerbating the aforementioned problems. Not only is the large Umbrian reservoir affected by the phenomenon, but also the Faldo in Montone and the Gatti in Narni.
The League councilors identified European legislation that allows for exemptions from the ban on hunting if certain populations could cause serious damage to agricultural crops, forests, livestock, and fisheries.
National enforcement regulations provide that Regions can activate control plans even in areas where hunting is prohibited, to protect livestock, agroforestry, and fish production.
Furthermore, some regions with similar problems, such as Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia Romagna, and Liguria, have already implemented active policies and actions similar to those requested by the Umbria League, and these are believed to be no longer postponable.
