Stefano Vaccari, representing the Democratic Party, challenged the strategy adopted so far for wild boar depopulation efforts to combat ASF.
Stefano Vaccari's argument was that of excessive bureaucracy and the resulting slowness of all operations, which the Democratic Party representative believes could be more concrete. This was a direct criticism of the Meloni government's strategy for containing the species.
According to the Democratic Party, in fact, not all regions are equipped to implement the recommendations included in the extraordinary plan. It is believed that these limitations continue to exist in the activation of the meat supply chain.
Unable to manage the number of scheduled culls, given the excessive number of checks to be carried out, some local health authorities are asking the ATCs to reduce the sampling days.
Stefano Vaccari's comments follow those of the Honorable La Pietra, who outlined the progress of the work. It was noted that just under 2.000 wild boar carcasses were found. In September, the Special Commissioner for African Swine Fever adopted the Special Plan for the Capture, Culling, and Disposal of Wild Boars and Strategic Actions for the Development of Eradication Plans in the African Swine Fever Restriction Zones for 2023-2028. All of this is aimed at achieving a significant reduction in wild boar density.
The Extraordinary Plan, La Pietra noted, defines objectives, timelines, and methods and is primarily implemented through hunting and control activities. It will be adjusted annually based on the purchase numbers.
