Based on the legendary Mark V action, the new proposal from Weatherby redefines the parameters of lightness and precision for the mountain hunter, integrating titanium, carbon fiber and “ultra-light” technical solutions.
In the rifle segment bolt action specialist, the brand Weatherby continues to pave the way for innovation dedicated to the most extreme environmental contexts. The latest addition, the Mark V Backcountry Goat, presents itself as a perfect synthesis between mechanical tradition and materials science, designed with a single imperative: to minimize weight without sacrificing the reliability and millimetric precision required by mountain hunting.
Mechanics of avanguardia: titanium is the protagonist
The beating heart of the Backcountry Capra is the Mark V action, revisited with a modern twist. To drastically reduce the overall mass, Weatherby opted for the use of the titanium, a material that guarantees an unmatched strength-to-weight ratio. The shutter features the classic six closing tenons (characteristic of the Mark V) with an aperture angle of only 54°, a configuration that allows for rapid rearming cycles and minimal optic bulk.
The barrel is no exception: featuring a double-helical fluted groove , it contributes not only to weight savings but also to faster heat dissipation. Lengths vary between 19” (483 mm) for the short actions and 23” (584 mm) for the standard ones, with a ½x28 threaded muzzle for the possible mounting of muzzle brakes or sound moderators.
The collaboration with Peak 44 led to the development of the Bridger stock , a carbon fiber component specific to this model. The stock is distinguished by:
- Skeleton design: strategic cuts that reduce weight without compromising structural rigidity.
- Distinctive aesthetics: exposed carbon fiber finish embellished with gray, white and rust-colored sponges.
- Protective finish: The metal (action, barrel, bolt and safety) is protected by a treatment Cerakote in “Graphite Black” color, resistant to abrasion and the most corrosive atmospheric agents.
Featherweights and calibers available
The result of this optimization is a weapon whose weight varies, depending on the configuration, between an incredible 1.815 and 2.085 grams . Such lightness is supported by an extremely rational choice of calibers, divided between short and standard actions:
| Action Type | Calibers Available |
| Action Shorts | .308 Win, 6,5 Creedmoor, .22 Creedmoor, .25 Creedmoor |
| Standard Action | .240 Wby Mag, .270 Win, .280 Ackley Imp, 6,5 Wby Rpm, .25 Wby Rpm |
As for the shot, Weatherby did not compromise, equipping the rifle with a package TriggerTech, famous for its crystalline breaking and millimetric adjustability. The power supply is entrusted to a ADL type blind magazine (2+1 shot capacity), ideal solution for maintaining clean lines and reducing debris infiltration into the barrel.
Presented on the American market with a list price of dollars 3.499, the Mark V Backcountry Capra is positioned in the range premium of the market. For Italian hunters, the eyes are on Bignami, official distributor of the brand Weatherby, which will take care of its possible importation and distribution throughout the country.
The Backcountry Capra is not simply a lightweight rifle, but a platform dedicated to those who tackle significant differences in altitude, where every gram saved translates into greater clarity when shooting.
