Likely change in ammunition used for hunting and shooting in the UK.
Following recommendations from the National Health and Safety Authority, the UK government is exploring specific solutions for the near-total containment of lead in ammunition.
Specifically these are the points:
- Ban on the use of lead-containing cartridges for hunting and clay shooting; the possibility under consideration is that the ban will take effect with a transition period of five years from the law's enactment. The legislation that is enacted will likely include exceptions for sports shooters.
- Ban on lead bullets starting from .243 caliber and above: the ban is expected to be introduced with a three-year implementation period. The current draft does not include restrictions for calibers smaller than the aforementioned .243 and for rimfire ammunition.
- Outdoor shooting ranges: The use of lead will be permitted, but only if specific risk reduction measures are in place. The required compliance period is two years.
- Air weapons: no restrictions.
The UK has learned a lot from Denmark's experience.
