This spring, the Romanian Ministry of Environment, as part of its brown bear management project, introduced hunting regulations.
The project defines four zones in Romania, where bear density is monitored and, based on this and other assessments, a decision is made to eliminate a quota through hunting.
This embraces the principle of sustainable hunting, which the CIC has always supported. The CIC itself contributed to the study through the LARGE CARNIVORE platform, which supported the 65th General Assembly held in Madrid. This was, in fact, the occasion for a meeting between the European Commission and representatives of Nordic hunters. The Romanian delegation also participated, and this input subsequently led to the amendment to the Romanian state law, which requires the country's Ministry of the Environment to approve, if necessary, a bear hunting package.
The CIC is confident that this law will soon provide a solution to brown bear overpopulation and proudly reiterates the usefulness of its studies for the management of large carnivores in Romania.
